Understanding Headaches

Evergreen Chiropractic | December 1, 2024

Headaches can stem from various sources, making it difficult to pinpoint the exact cause. However, most headaches can be categorized into three broad types: physical, emotional, and chemical. Understanding these causes can help in managing and alleviating headache pain effectively.

1. Physical Causes

Physical factors that contribute to headaches include:

  • Tight Neck Muscles: Tension in the neck can lead to referred pain in the head.

  • Subluxation: Misalignment of the spine can irritate nerves and cause head pain.

  • Jaw Clenching: Often related to stress, clenching your jaw can trigger tension headaches.

  • Biomechanical Changes: Any changes to posture or movement patterns can cause headaches or aggravate them, particularly when they affect the neck or upper back.

These physical issues can even irritate the Greater Occipital Nerve at the base of the skull, which may lead to radiating forehead pain.

2. Emotional Causes

Stress and emotional tension are common headache triggers. The body’s response to stress often manifests physically, and this can lead to or exacerbate headaches. Managing emotional well-being is crucial in preventing stress-related headaches.

3. Chemical Causes

Chemical triggers are often harder to pinpoint and can vary widely. Common chemical headache triggers include:

  • Food Intolerances: Certain foods can trigger headaches in sensitive individuals.

  • Smells: Strong odors like perfumes, chemicals, or food can sometimes trigger headaches.

  • Hormonal Changes: Particularly in women, hormonal fluctuations can lead to headaches.

  • Dehydration: Lack of water can lead to headaches due to reduced blood flow to the brain.

  • Medication Side Effects: Some medications can have headaches as a side effect.

Keep a Journal to Understand Your Headaches

Tracking your headaches can help identify patterns and triggers. Consider documenting the following:

  • When did the headache start?

  • Where is the pain located?

  • Does the pain radiate anywhere?

  • What is the intensity and quality of the pain?

  • Do you have sensitivity to light, sound, or smell?

  • What did you eat in the last 24 hours?

  • If female, where are you in your menstrual cycle?

  • Do you have any other accompanying symptoms?

By keeping a detailed journal, you can help your chiropractor determine the best course of treatment.
